Fashion & Interiors. A Gendered Affair explores the relationship between fashion and interiors from a gender perspective.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, bourgeois ladies embellished both their bodies and their homes with drapes, fringing and ruches. Male designers such as Henry van de Velde and Josef Hoffmann waged war on that decorative excess and designed women's clothing and interiors as part of a well-thought-out total work of art. Fashion designers Paul Poiret and Jeanne Lanvin drew inspiration from this approach and used interior design to create a powerful brand for their fashion houses. The impact of clothing also resonated with modernist (interior) architects such as Adolf Loos, Lilly Reich and Le Corbusier.
This complex history is reflected in surprising ways in the visual language and creations of contemporary fashion designers such as Ann Demeulemeester, Martin Margiela, and Raf Simons.
This book is published in conjunction with the exhibition Fashion & Interiors. A Gendered Affair on view at MoMu?Fashion Museum Antwerp from 29 March to 3 August 2025.

This book chronicles the career of Belgian photographer John Vink, who started at Libération in 1985. His personal project Water in the Sahel won the Eugene Smith Prize in 1986, highlighting his dedication to capturing the human experience in difficult circumstances. As one of the first members of Agence VU, Vink documented refugee camps around the world.
His series Peuples d'En Haut shows the resilience and cultural identity of mountain communities, such as the Mam in Guatemala and the Hmong in Laos. After years of travelling, Vink settled in Cambodia in 2000, which allowed him to delve deeper into a culture. Now living in Brussels, he continues to inspire with his powerful visual stories that explore themes of identity and humanity. With a text contribution by Rik Van Puymbroeck.
James Ensor (1860?1949) was a Belgian painter known for his provocative and innovative works, often featuring masks and grotesque figures. Through mediums like etching and lithography, Ensor delved into themes of existential exploration and the macabre. His graphic oeuvre showcases his mastery of line and form, inviting us into a realm where masks, skeletons, and surreal landscapes converge to challenge conventions and provoke thought. But how did Ensor make prints? What techniques did he use? Which old masters inspired him and in what way did he experiment with this medium? For almost 50 years, the theme of fashion has been a constant in the work of US artist Cindy Sherman. Cindy Sherman ? Dirk Braeckman (°1958) en Léon Spilliaert (1881-1946) gaan met hun unieke oeuvres de confrontatie en dialoog met elkaar aan. Hoewel het werk van de twee kunstenaars meer dan een halve eeuw uit elkaar liggen, zijn er talloze visuele en thematische gelijkenissen. Spilliaert creëerde melancholische composities van architecturale elementen, verstilde interieurs en benevelde zeezichten.
Braeckman, sterk beïnvloed door Spilliaert, gebruikt fotografie om gesluierde beelden te maken die balanceren tussen droom en werkelijkheid. Ze delen een fascinatie voor verstilling en isolatie, vaak uitgewerkt in monochrome tinten en bijzondere kadreringen.

Books of Hours were the bestsellers of the late Middle Ages. From dukes to merchants and servants - this book found its way into almost all walks of life: among both women and men, in Latin and the vernacular, and in simple and luxurious editions. Much has been written about the decoration or illumination of books of hours, but information on their use and meaning is scarce. Who were the readers, what topics do the texts cover, why is it called a ?book of hours? and why do they appear time and again in Flemish portraits from the late Middle Ages?
This publication offers an in-depth sociological look at books of hours and their representation in portraits by the Flemish Primitives, using the internationally renowned collection of Musea Brugge as a starting point.
