How the legendary portraitist forged enduring relationships with his sitters, from Marilyn Monroe to Truman Capote.
Over the course of his six-decade-long career, photographer Richard Avedon worked with a tremendous range of portrait subjects: models, actors, ballet dancers, celebrities, civil rights activists, heads of state, inventors, musicians, visual artists and writers. He also frequently returned to the same subjects. Published for an exhibition at Palazzo Reale, Richard Avedon: Relationships spotlights these recurring figures: painter Jasper Johns in 1965 and 1976; novelist Carson McCullers in 1956 and 1958; the Beatles, Andy Warhol, Marilyn Monroe and Allen Ginsberg in 1963 and 1970. Perhaps his most intimate and enduring photographic relationship occurred with his friend and collaborator Truman Capote.
Selected from the extensive Avedon collection at the Center for Creative Photography by curator Rebecca A. Senf, this catalog presents 100 fashion and portrait photographs that emphasize the role of relationship-building in Avedon's practice. His attunement to his individual subjects--as well as his crystalline technical proficiency--enabled him to create portraits radiant with vivid life.
Richard Avedon (1923-2004) was an influential American fashion and fine art photographer known for his emotive portraits of celebrities. His book In the American West (1985) is widely considered a seminal work in the history of photography. Il révèle également les façons dont Lee Miller a inspiré le travail de Man Ray à cette époque ainsi que plus tard, y compris la découverte de la technique photographique de solarisation, qui est rapidement devenu le style le plus largement reconnu de Man Ray.

Crewdson's epic photographic trilogy--a portrait of America a decade in the making.
Over the past three decades, Gregory Crewdson has been fleshing out a portrait of middle America, an America gazing wide-eyed at the glimmers of a fading dream. His cinematographically staged photos have pieced together the fragments of a twilight world tinged with numbness.
This book brings together three bodies of work made between 2012 and 2022: Cathedral of the Pines (2012-14), An Eclipse of Moths (2018-19) and Eveningside (2021-22). Envisaged as a trilogy, they provide unique insight into a decade of creation and offer a comprehensive view of the universe that has positioned Crewdson as one of the major figures of contemporary photography. This trilogy is introduced by Fireflies (1996), a pivotal series for grasping the intimate undercurrents in Crewdson's work.
Gregory Crewdson (born 1962) is a graduate of SUNY Purchase and the Yale School of Art, where he is now the director of graduate studies in photography. His series Beneath the Roses is the subject of the 2012 documentary Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters. His work has been exhibited widely in the US and Europe. Crewdson is represented by Gagosian Gallery, New York. -
This book presents the legendary jewelry and precious objects of Van Cleef & Arpels, and how they relate to time, nature and love.

A beautiful homage to the influence of St Francis and the masterworks by Giotto, Cimabue and others in the Basilica of Assisi.
This richly illustrated hardcover volume focuses on the exquisitely detailed beauty of the artworks by Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti that adorn the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi and the town of Assisi in the heart of Italy's Umbria region, animating the profound humanism and affirmative energy that St Francis brought to Umbria and Italy itself. Through an authoritative yet witty narrative, the book guides our attention across key themes of the Franciscan phenomenon, which reflected a radical change in consciousness toward human relationships and humankind's relationship with nature. The resonance between Christ and Francis is evidenced, as is the less well-known supportive role of women in both periods.
Containing detailed images of the paintings, this textured analysis documents the artistically rich and innovative atmosphere and the complex medieval setting in which St. Francis and the painters of the basilica lived.

Key works by the Spanish Impressionist painter of landscapes, portraits and monumental, historically themed canvases.
Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida was one of the most beloved and appreciated artists of his day. In 1908, he was hailed as "the greatest living painter in the world" for his extraordinary technique and the pleasing nature of his subjects, rising to a level of fame that very soon went well beyond national borders.
Joaquín Sorolla: Painter of Light recounts the extraordinary stylistic development of this ambitious and determined painter, who made art his reason for living. Sorolla's magnificent and passionate artistic journey was one of joy, suffering, satisfaction and research. His main pursuit and innovation in painting was the study of light, rigorously captured from real life and en plein air, gradually evolving into an immediate, spontaneous and sophisticated language.
Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923) was born in Valencia, Spain, a city to which he returned throughout his life. His fame as a painter was established by 1890, with exhibitions in Munich, Paris, Chicago, Vienna, Venice and Buenos Aires. By 1900, he was considered as the most famous of all living Spanish artists; his work paved the transition from Impressionism to Picasso. -

The best of Japanese graphic poster design, from the 1964 Tokyo Olympics to the Issey Miyake logo.
This book brings together the best of Japanese graphic poster design--from the 1964 Tokyo Olympics to the creation of the Issey Miyake logo, and from the Osaka Expo to the official poster for the Pan-Pacific Design Congress. Japanese contemporary posters are considered to have started in the mid-'50s, after World War II and following a period of depression, post-militarism and post-autarchy. This new expressive mode was fueled by stimuli from abroad, but it was also a chance to reinterpret traditional themes and colors, bringing them into modernity in refreshing and fruitful ways. In the maze of expressive forms that flourished in Japan during the postwar period, graphic design stands out as a precious tool for following the thread of national creativity and the intense permanence of traditional aesthetic sensibility through these new forms.
Over half a century after the inception of graphics and with the coming Olympic Games taking place in 2021, this volume takes a wide view of the trends and aesthetic shifts that can be traced in the development of graphic design in Japan. Contemporary Japanese Posters includes 85 graphic designers and 756 posters. It is the most complete volume on the subject in any language.

An affordable introduction to the Art Informel pioneer's poetical use of everyday materials.
A leading light of the Art Informel generation that also included Tàpies and Dubuffet, Alberto Burri (1915-95) continues to exert a huge influence on artists today, as the popularity of his 2015 Guggenheim show and the perpetual scarcity of Burri monographs attests. This volume--the most comprehensive book on the artist in print--explores the beauty and complexity of the creative process, "material poetry," that undergirded all of his work.
Burri worked with the most varied materials with an inexhaustible creative energy: tar, paper, fabric, jute sacks, combustions of plastic, wood and iron all found their way into his picture plane, transfiguring the vocabulary of painting for the postwar sensibility. The titles of Burri's various series convey this "material poetry" Gobbi (hunchbacks), Muffe (molds), Bianchi (whites), Legni (woods), Ferri (irons), Combustioni plastiche (plastic combustions), Cretti and Cellotex. This affordable volume introduces Burri's poetical vocabulary of materials for a new audience.
