Handbook of Tyranny portrays the routine cruelties of the twenty-first century through a series of detailed non-fictional graphic illustrations. None of these cruelties represent extraordinary violence - they reflect the day-to-day implementation of laws and regulations around the globe.
Every page of the book questions our current world of walls and fences, police tactics and prison cells, crowd control and refugee camps. The dry and factual style of storytelling through technical drawings is the graphic equivalent to bureaucratic rigidity born of laws and regulations. The level of detail depicted in the illustrations of the book mirror the repressive efforts taken by authorities around the globe.
The twenty-first century shows a general striving for an ever more regulated and protective society. Yet the scale of authoritarian interventions and their stealth design adds to the growing difficulty of linking cause and effect. Handbook of Tyranny gives a profound insight into the relationship between political power, territoriality and systematic cruelties. -

The Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa (1919-2003) fused sensitivity for local context with the technological discoveries and design principles of modernism in his work. Accordingly, Bawa often incorporated materials (local stone and timber) and layouts (high roofs, cross-ventilation, vast overhangs) specific to Sri Lanka's monsoon climate and storied architectural history - from the cave monasteries of the Anuradhapura period to the feudal Walauwa style of manor houses - into his modernist designs.
Gathering essays by scholars and writers across a multitude of disciplines - including architecture, photography, geography, urban design and art history - this volume spotlights Bawa's exceptionally beautiful architectural drawings, delving into the central, multipronged role of the medium in his practice, from ideation to instruction to post-construction review. The anthology also explores the identity of post-independence Sri Lanka, which Bawa helped to shape - aesthetically and, less overtly, ideologically. Featuring over 200 lush drawings and photographs, many of which have never been published before, the book promises to engage both general and scholarly audiences with interests in architecture, drawing and archives. -

Mae Luiza is a borough at the edge of the city of Natal in the northeast of Brazil with approximately 15,000 inhabitants - a favela with all the typical grievances. In the 1980s Padre Sabino Gentili came to Natal from Italy, and settled in Mae Luiza. He built the fi rst Catholic church in the poor community and in 1984 founded the Centro Socio with German, Swiss and Brazilian support. In a participatory process in which the community was able to voice its needs and priorities, the Centro initiated communal social infrastructure for education and medical care, and later for sports, culture and community life. After Padre Sabino's death in 2006 the Ameropa Foundation strengthened its commitment with further investments in the infrastructure, expanding social and educative services and community-building measures. The efforts culminated in the construction of an arena for sporting and communal activities and also a music school, two outstanding buildings and focal points in the neighborhood, designed by Swiss architects: facilities usually absent in the Brazilian peripheries.
This richly illustrated volume documents the transformation of Mae Luiza as an example of how to build community, create citizenship and identity, and promote initiative and participation with timely and punctual investments. Alongside a novel written by the esteemed Brazilian author Paulo Lins, short articles and essays trace the history of Mae Luiza from the point of view of local activists as well as invited authors from various fi elds.

Across the African continent, but especially in the sub-Saharan regions the light provided by the sun has a particularly stark quality, which becomes most apparent in relation to age-old buildings and in the way in which it shapes daily routines. Without relying on artificial light, architecture had to both make use of the sun light to create a light source within a building, yet also protect those living in the houses from the intensity of it. This has resulted in vernacular architecture that works with very few or small openings that render the inside of a building near pitch black while the outside is illuminated by direct sunshine that bears down mercilessly.
On the initiative of the lighting company Zumtobel Group, photographer Iwan Baan and architect Francis Kere set out to capture how the sun's natural light cycle shapes vernacular architecture with little to no artificial light sources in Burkina Faso. They travelled to three exemplary locations: Communal compounds in Gando, the main mosque of Bobo Dioulasso and the terraced houses in Dano utilising pots to create skylights. Baan's pictures are accompanied by architectural sketches by Francis Kere, who himself grew up in this light environment and whose architecture is inspired by it. The stunning photographs are printed in a special technique to give a sense of being immersed in the very light conditions that are being documented.

The first publication on the Kenyan collective exploring colonial erasure and the future of architecture in the age of the Anthropocene.
This fifth volume in Lars Müller's Architect's Studio series is dedicated to the Nairobi-based architects Cave_bureau. This acclaimed collective of architects and researchers?the first Kenyan firm to appear at the Venice Architecture Biennale, in 2021?explores the synergy between architecture, urbanism and nature, and curates performative events of resistance within caves along the Great Rift Valley in East Africa. The cave, as physical space and as metaphor, is seen by the collective as a provocation to test the limits of contemporary architecture.
Here, Cave_bureau's Stella Mutegi and Kabage Karanja describe eight of their projects. Stunning photography is accompanied by essays posing questions about the future of architecture in the age of the Anthropocene, the effects of colonial extraction and erasure on African architecture, as well as the specificity of each continent and each geographic space. -
